About Kayaking:

Inflatable Kayaks

The Sarapiqui River is our most popular destination on inflatable kayaks or “duckies”. The logistics of the adventure are the same as the one day rafting trip; the difference is in how you choose to descend the river. In a “duckie” you are much closer to the water and rapids, therefore the experience is more challenging and many people really enjoy the added excitement and sense of empowerment they gain from really being in control of their boat. We also offer a “duckie” trip on the Pacuare River for advanced paddlers.

Hard Shell Kayaks

All of the trips that Exploradores Outdoors offer in rafts can also be done in a kayak. When you decide which destination best fits your adventure we will have the equipment ready and waiting for you. In order to uphold our safety standards one’s skill level and experience must be consistent with the grade of the river you choose.

In addition to fully organizing kayaking trips, there exists also the option to rent equipment if you are planning your own descent. The kayaks available for rental include: EZ, Stubbie, Mr. Clean, 3D, Vertigo and Medieval, 76, Transforming.

Our Exploration Center at the Pacuare take out provides a central point at which we can arrange shuttle transportation to a variety of put ins. We also offer camping at the Exploration Center which allows you to maximize your time on the river each day without the worry of travel the same day as your descent.

•Difficulty: Class III - IV
•Distance: 30 Km /18 miles
•Number of rapids: 52
•Approximate river time: 4 Hours
•Minimum age: 12 years

Description and Itinerary: The Pacuare River is one of the best choices for your adventure treks in Costa Rica. Another trip in the country does not exist that offers you a perfect blend of wilderness exposure and excitement, both in one day. Pacuare is world famous for its sheer beauty. A true river gorge, it is flanked by steep, green walls. Here you enjoy the feeling of total isolation from urban life and the realness of being connected with nature. You see waterfalls cascade into the river from both sides as colorful, tropical birds fly right over your head. Amazing views of this virgin tropical rainforest area appear before your eyes as you descend this true exploratory land. Wildlife is abundant, with sloths, toucans, parrots, coatis, morpho butterflies and colorful frogs being common sights. The white water is equally exciting. It is not an overly challenging river, but it has a lot of rapids, therefore giving you an adventure filled with lots of fun. The 18 mile one day run includes a total of 52 rapids. Few rivers in the world can offer you so many. Upon arrival to the river we will gear you up with a life jacket, helmet and paddle and then brief you with a full safety orientation talk. Finally, it is time to take off down the rapids! The first 4 miles consist of fun class II-III rapids, which is a perfect time to test your new river skills and gain confidence in your team. Here you can find pockets of secondary growth forest that are extremely beautiful. After about 40 minutes we will enter the famous Pacuare River Gorge, which is 5 miles of some of the best white water Costa Rica has to offer. The rapids here are “Terciopelo snake”, “Double drop”, “Upper and Lower Huacas”, “Pin ball” to name a few. You will also see the Huacas waterfall, a 150 foot dramatic drop into the river. After the gorge the river opens up to a 5 mile stretch on the Valle del Pacuare, where the river has a different character. It is wide open, which gives you the opportunity to rest a bit and take the opportunity to do some wildlife spotting. The main rapids here are “Cimarrones”, “The Play Hole”, “El Indio” and “Magnetic Rock”. The forest remains just as lush and the rapids just as fun. We finish in Siquirres, at our own private Exploration Center, where you can take a shower, change and enjoy the gardens and terrace while having a beer or two and reflecting with your new friends about the great adventure you just shared.

•Number of rapids: 49
•Approximate river time: 7 Hours
•Minimum age: 12 years

Description and Itinerary: Our overnight Pacuare Adventure is a Paddle and Hike expedition. Not only will we raft a variety of exciting rapids, but we will also hike to pristine waterfalls, fun swimming holes and primary jungles. This package includes at least one hike a day, based on your athletic and adventure desires. Please note that different companies run the same stretch of river for one, two and three day trips. In order to give you better value for both your time and money, we use an upper “put in” for our overnight trips, giving you an extra 6.5 kilometers (4 extra miles) upstream. This makes your first day on the river 100% longer, in addition to running twice as many rapids. The first day we will run 13kms (8 miles) of continuous class III white water for a total of 14 rapids. Then we will arrive at Pacuare Tent Camp shortly past noon, on time for lunch. Afternoon activities include various optional hikes, fishing in the river, or relaxing in a hammock. Pacuare Tent Camp has a deep sense of the wilderness. Located right next to the river in the middle of a primary forest it offers you safari style facilities, with large comfortable walk-in tents permanently set on spacious wooden platforms. Gardens are very well taken care of, perfectly blending with their surroundings. Modern toilets and showers are also available for your use. The main building provides perfect “hanging out” space and an excellent view of the river. Here we will have our late afternoon happy hour and dinner. The kitchen is well stocked with china, wine glasses and all of the necessary utensils to provide you with a great dining experience. The second day begins with a hot, freshly brewed cup of Costa Rica’s famous coffee. After a hearty breakfast is served and we pack our gear, our river descent continues. All of the class IV rapids are on this day, so now it is time to truly test the skills you learned on the previous day. The second day is significantly longer on the river, with 23kms (14 miles) to travel and about 30 rapids.
