Yes, that is a real fly

Posted on August 20, 2009

Around our own garden we see a variety of wildlife, especially insects, that seem impossible to describe.  Here is a stunning blue fly that we found.  It’s real - we didn’t paint it, although it looks like it! We set it on a loofah sponge grown from our own garden for this photo opportunity.

It’s not a fly…it’s a cicada http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada When they first come out of their shell after coming from the ground they are a bright green then they turn darker and darker as they age until they reach a brown. People in the Southern parts of the United STates call them locusts, and they call real locusts grasshoppers, but they are not real locusts.

Thank you for the identification and clarification. Certainly looks like a beautiful fly, but I’m glad to have the clarification.
